The San Antonio Independent School District, which once had eliminated recess, now has made a daily 15 minutes on the playground optional under a new guideline.If a school is ranked “academically unacceptable” by the state for low test scores, students there can kiss even the 15 minutes of play goodbye.

Wow. I can’t imagine that they don’t see that kids might be able to concentrate better after they’ve been allowed to let some of their energy out by playing. And I can’t imagine that it would only be 15 minutes anyway — they’re children aren’t they? Isn’t the point of childhood to be able to play and explore not to be turned into a robot to pass a standardized test?

Guess it depends on how you get your money. It’s amazing what the state is subjecting the schools to in order to receive about 10 percent of it’s funding.

The whole educational system depresses me — it has to be so hard for teachers who have to teach in ways that they personally are against because the school needs the funding.
