PE Teacher of the Year

Star Community Newspapers:

Diane Davey, physical education teacher and coach at Plano Senior High School, has been named the 2006 Texas Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance Teacher of the Year for physical education.

Congratulations! Sounds like she’s doing the kind of PE that will help kids develop life long skills.

Star Community Newspapers:

Among the changes in Davey’s classes has been the individualization of instruction. In her weight training classes the students set goals that are different from student to student. She has also integrated technology in her classes, for example the students wear heart rate monitors which allow them to exercise within their safety target zone.

Obviously not a subject covered by the TAKS.

Unbalanced homeschool article

APP.COM – Parent-teachers | Asbury Park Press Online:

There is anecdotal evidence that home schooling is on the rise in New Jersey and elsewhere. Exact numbers are hard to come by in New Jersey because there is no requirement that parents report their decision to home-school.

Nancy Plent, who founded the Unschoolers Network in Farmingdale in the 1970s as she began home-schooling her son, said the movement contin-ues to grow. She communicates with 1,600 to 1,800 people on her mailing list.

“Every year at this time, the phone starts ringing and the mailbox begins picking up mail” from people seeking information on home schooling, she said. “I think it is here to stay, and it is almost mainstream now. We are no longer the oddball tree-huggers.”

Only one anti-homeschooling comment. Usually, the writer would have given at least equal time to the anti-homeschooling view.
